Mo Sang Kor Bah Kut Teh @ Leboh Bangau, Taman Berkeley Klang

From the first sip of Mo Sang Kor's BKT in Hutong Food Court, Jenn & I had fallen in love with the thick herbal flavour. Although they can really try to use a bigger bowl because the amount of soup given was rather puny! We'd been told that this is the way that they have been doing business spanning 3 generations. Since the price to eat BKT in Hutong Foodcourt was RM16++ for a bowl of rice + BKT (meat of your choice) and a glass of iced tea, which we thought were rather exorbitant, we decided to go to their Klang outlet instead.

Utilising the power of Google (well, who doesn't use Google nowadays?), I searched for the nearest Mo Sang Kor outlet in Klang. Their Pandamaran outlet popped out first.. "too far" we thought! Then Berkeley Park's name appeared and the whole world seemed brighter again :) both of us agreed that the best time to enjoy BKT was early morning... I mean, VERY EARLY.. when everyone was still in dreamland. Imagined our excitement when we spotted this sign as we drove by.

The excitement was shortlived when we were greeted by this sight! Unbelieveable!!! I looked at my watch and it showed 8am. I couldn't believe that I actually had to wait for table at this hour! The rather stuffy interior didn't help much either as Sher Ryn could get grumpy anytime. Lady Luck must be with me this time as I spotted someone leaving after 5 min!

We quickly placed out order before I spotted a familiar face! This guy was the one that we saw in Hutong Foodcourt. I smiled and had a quick chat with him. He told me that he helped out at this place from 7am onwards and would then rush to downtown KL (Hutong Lot 10) to start preparing for business at 11am (he had to get there at 10am). His wife would then continue his work.

He seemed to know what I was doing and promptly asked me to feel free to continue taking pictures, starting with this huge pot filled with various parts of the pork. Just at the sight of it made me hungrier than ever!

Mo Sang Kor's version of BKT in a pack ready to be made right at the comfort of your home. Anyone?? I did.. and it tasted nothing like I had here so just forget it OK?

I brought along my own vintage Puer - perfect to wash down all the oil from consuming BKT! They do have their own tea should you don't have any.

Old-school style of boiling water!

Our orders arrived in less than 10min which was rather fast considering the outlet was in its maximum capacity! My stomach drummed at the sight of the porky-licious BKT

Paikut (ribs) @ RM7.50,

Nuan kut (soft bones) @ RM7.50,

and pork tendon (from its knuckles) - only available on weekends and in limited numbers so if you want to savour this part please be early!

considering amount of works required to extract the tendon from the knuckles and therefore the price is higher compared to the former two.. I think it's about RM9 for this bowl alone. Take a closer look at the part which is full of collagen goodness :)

A new pot was brought out shortly after.. replacing the previous pot which was already empty (I think in less than 20min).

Nothing was spared and by the end of the meal, we had to drink a lot of tea to wash down the oil! BURP!!!

Leo's verdict - what I like about each and every bowl of the BKT was that it contained a piece of mushroom. Being a sucker for mushroom, I couldn't help but rave about this fact! LOL! I don't know about their Pandamaran outlet but be prepared to spend considerable time to find a table. After all, the outlet is located in an intermediate shoplot unit and therefore, tables are limited! Apparently they have opened another outlet in Bandar Puteri Puchong. Maybe that's where I'll go if I crave for Mo Sang Kor's BKT. But then Pao Xiang is conveniently located in 1Utama and offers similar version of BKT... and although I prefer Mo Sang Kor's BKt, I'd settle for Pao Xiang most of the time due to the proximity to my house in BU!!! And for those who sweat easily, be prepared as I was drenched by the time I finished the meal.

P.S: Non-halal (what? you expect BKT to be halal?)

Restoran Ban Lee @ Jalan Ipoh, KL

Jenn and I had errant to do in Jalan Ipoh one Saturday morning and so we planned to have breakfast here. We spotted this particular restaurant as we drove by, parked our car near intended destination and walked here. They occupied two shoplots which are just next to Dinasty Hotel, so it should be easy to find.

Along Jalan Ipoh which is in its usual chaotic and busy traffic situation. And it was especially hot and stuffy that particular day... geram betul!

These 2 foreign workers preparing the bah kut teh for customers...

The morning crowd having bah kut teh breakfast...

As usual, a pot of puer tea to wash down the oil from consuming bah kut teh. For me, I think bah kut teh is not complete without Chinese tea!

We asked for claypot bah kut teh for one pax... and it was served not long after. The broth was quite thick with the aroma of herbs, and the portion of pork ribs + lean meat, golden needle mushroom, button mushroom, yaw mak and fu chuk were quite generous too...

To me, bah kut teh is not complete without these - deep fried dough fritters or yaw char koay (^_^) it was quite crispy to my liking!

Leo's verdict - overall the bah kut teh was good but I seldom come to Jalan Ipoh area unless there's thing to do. So I think that I'll stick back to my usual places in PJ or Sungai Way area. To those who stay nearby or happen to be in Jalan Ipoh, this place is worth to be given a try.

Purple Cane Tea Restaurant @ Shaw Parade, Pudu KL

Jenn & I were quite free on one Sunday afternoon, as we had finished doing the chores for the weekend. I have just started to appreciate the art of tea, and wanted to buy tea sets to put at home. Where else to get them but at their HQ here in Pudu? They have a very large selection of tea, pots and accessories on the 1st floor. You can't really miss the signboard if you see Shaw Parade... too big to miss actually (lol!)

Before that, we had dinner at their restaurant which is situated in front of Shaw Parade. I really like the interior - the colour used is soft & the tables + chairs are simple.

I like their stand lamp too...

From the entrance, you would pass by the cashier and tea counter, with some selection of tea, teapots, cups and accessories. You can also opt to try the tea here. But for complete collection, one must proceed to the 1st floor.

Puer, long jing, black tea, oolong... you name it, they have it! Some selections are on promotion!

For starter, you probably would order their tea... after all, this is what they are famous for. They charge RM1.80 per pax doe their regular tea and up to RM12/pax for their premium selections, such as vintage puer. We had their regular Shui Xian tea.

Fried tea rice homemade style (long jing green tea) @ RM6.90 - a decent dish. Not much to rave about this.

Fried udon in black pepper sauce with tea mill (tie guan yin) @ RM7.90 - recommended by the waitress who attended to us, I like this dish... the black pepper sauce was not too strong and the udon mee was chewy... just the way I like it.

Green tea peanut paste @ RM3 - the texture is super smooth and also not too sweet. love it!

Part 2 - Jenn & I were back for the second time before the first one was posted... lol! This time I am going to write about their bah kut teh.. that's right!! you heard me... BAH KUT TEH!!! But I thought that Purple Cane doesn't serve pork?? Yes you are right.. coz they served chicken instead.. LOL!!! Actually Jenn & I had noticed this dish when we came here for the first time. But it was too late, as we'd ordered other dishes. So we planned this trip to Purple Cane again.

The bah kut teh came in claypot @ RM22.. and was kept hot with fire below! The soup was spiced up using herbs and oolong tea. Cabbage & golden needle mushroom were given too :)

Taufu pok came separately...

Bah kut teh for me... is not complete without yaw char koay (dough fritter). Very crispy... and I love it!

Tea egg (lychee black tea) @ RM1 per piece - just as nice!

Ice lemon green tea @ RM5.90 - full of flavour and worth every penny paid!

Leo's verdict - For many people, this dish will be less aromatic due to the chicken meat instead of pork. However, kudos to Purple Cane for coming out with their version of "kai" kut teh. The soup was not too strong with herbal taste though. It will depend on your preference in the end. For those who don't eat pork, this is as good as it gets!

With other outlets in The Garden Mid Valley and Chinese Assembly Hall (Jalan Maharajalela)... do check out on discounts given using certain credit cards! For me, I am their member so I get the discount all the times :)

Purple Cane Tea Restaurant @ The Gardens Mid Valley

As a member of Purple Cane, they would send me birthday card + discount vouchers every year during my birthday month of October. One of the vouchers entitle me for 20% on food & beverages. So one day when we were shopping in Mid Valley, Jenn & I went there for lunch. They have a very nice wooden table and chairs that look like being cut out from a log... I'd dreamt of this in my house :)

The discount vouchers

The whole interior was quite modern... with a lot of shelves to display tea & other related products.

Most of the shelves and walls were white... including their menu

Appetiser was braised peanut in herbs & tea - the peanuts were soft and nice.

We started off with Puer Tea @ RM2/pax... I like their teapots!

Then we had one of their herbal egg @ RM1/pc...

Next on the menu was their Burdock Chicken Tea Soup (cooked with dong ding oolong) @ RM5 - also served in teapot where you drank like how you drink tea :)

Pan fried egg with anchovies and tea mill (tie guan yin) @ RM8 - the tiny and crispy anchovies spread on top of the egg provided the difference compared to ordinary fried egg

Tea rice with simmered chicken in black tea (lychee black tea) @ RM7.90 - this particular dish tasted just like braised chicken teo chew style.. tofu included!

Fried mee hoon homemade style with tea mill (tie guan yin) @ RM8.90 - just like Singapore fried mee hoon... tasted as good! They gave a bolw of curry gravy for spicy flavour.

Leo's verdict - The tea was great, food was good, and service was fast! This is a place worth giving a try if you want healthy food...
