Delicious Lam Mee with Chinese wine

My first trip to Wei Sun was back in 2009... click here for my post back then!

I have never thought that I would be coming back here for the second time given that this restaurant is located in Kepong and I hardly venture into this area. One thing for sure is that everytime I come to KL, I would pass by Kepong before turning into LDP heading towards BU. It happened that it was almost noon by the time we passed by Kepong and both Jenn and her parents were hungry. Restoran Wei Sun came to mind and I immediately turned into Bandar Manjalara.

Lucky for us it was not lunch time yet and therefore parking were relatively easy to find and we quickly made our way to the restaurant.

Their signature Lam Mee is a must-order dish! It was prepared using 3 different type of Chinese wine to create a distinctive taste to the broth - and the wine blended very well with the flavour of Lam Mee's broth!

You'd find abalone slices, fresh prawns and ham slices together with the smooth & springy lam mee. I love the mee in its original flavour but being Jenn, she had to add vinegar to have sourish flavour in it.

We also ordered their buttermilk (nai yau) squid in 2 styles - dry style with egg floss; and wet style. Both excelled and we enjoyed having this together with the Lam Mee :)

Leo's verdict - they still manage to maintain the standard of Lam Mee which is a plus point as the objective for Jenn & I to travel to this particular place was for the dish. Too bad that we didn't travel far nowadays in search for good food, as the two little brats would be grumpy and the dining experience would not be that good.

Restoran Tanjung Dua @ Bandar Manjalara Kepong

Kepong is nothing short of good places to eat. For those who are familiar with this area, I'm pretty sure that you would agree with me. The only thing that you need to equip is navigation skill. These days, we are so lucky because names like Garmin, Papago, etc have made our lives easier - simply key in the address and there will be voice that will guide until you reach the intended destination. This is far cry from less than 10 years ago where I relied solely on my gut instinct or local's guide to get to a particular place.

Kepong was one of the earliest place that I used to go when I first came to KL in late 90s. At that time, there was no MRR2 or LDP that made our lives so much easier these days. I still remember how I hitched a ride on my cousin's Yamaha SS110 to the previously Fajar Kepong. Back in those years, roller-skating was very popular :P then another factor is Jenn! Yes, it's always about Jenn :) she used to live with her aunt in Bandar Manjalara. Naturally, I had to find my way through unfamiliar roads from Subang - Jalan Kuching - Kepong! (P.S: don't forget that LDP and MRR2 didn't exist in the 90s) Traffic was a nightmare everytime I drove there but it was worth it! Just the thought of spending even an hour or two with her was sufficient to brave through the congested roads in Kepong. There was a time I took almost 2.5hours to reach her house... all in the name of LOVE!

Now I know most (if not all) of the roads in Kepong after paying all the necessary fees in the form of petrol and toll charges. So when I took her out for breakfast, she would bring me to nearby restaurants. One of her favourite place for breakfast was Tanjung Dua. Coming here on weekdays or even weekends, you will notice a lot of hawker style restaurants operating. Tables and chairs are placed inside and outside to the extent occupying the parking spots for vehicles.

She loved this place for 2 reasons:

1) the famous "Sin Lui San Fa" (Cantonese) which translate to Angels spreading flower in English. Don't ask me the origin of this drink because this name has been used for so many years by this restaurant. It is actually cham (mixture of coffee and tea) but you'd notice two layers with coffee on top and tea at the bottom. I like this drink a lot and so did Jenn but lately the quality has not been consistent.

2) Pork noodle - as famous as Restoran Pomander's version among Kepong residents. Waiting time can get as long as an hour during weekends! HOwever, this place offers the dry version of pork noodle which tasted as good as the soup.

Normally I'd order something else so I could enjoy her pork noodle while eating mine. Their char koay teow (CKT) was not bad - full of wok hei, generous on the amount of cockles & fresh prawns!

And have you ever tried Chinese version of Western food??? LOL! No offense to Italian food lovers but Chinese have their own way to prepare pasta with new twist :P this is the stir fried version spaghetti with bird eye chilly and garlic; 2 pieces of bacons (tasted good but a bit oily) and sunny side up. Somehow I love the taste of the pasta.. hmmmm was it because I love Chinese food?

Leo's verdict - not bad for a place to enjoy breakfast without having to break the wallet. Since the weather is moderately cool in the morning, I love coming here just to have a glass of "Sin Lui San Fa". Located on the same row as the famous "Hennesy Loh Mee" of Restoran Wei Sun (Jalan 9/62A in Bandar Manjalara). It's not easy to find this place if you are not familiar with Kepong so make sure that you have a GPS in hand!

A good find in Kepong

When Ho Chak first introduced this place in their program quite a long time ago, I have already put this place in my must visit list. To be honest, I am not really a fan of anything that has got to do with fish head - curry fish head, fish head noodle or even steamed fish head. But that was the past!!! I had been well-trained by Jenn to eat almost everything (Well, almost...) ever since we started dating. Now there are still a few things that I can't bring myself to eat - bean sprout, spring onion, coriander, petai, and durian! Jenn abosolutely love eating all these stuff and that's why I may have deprived her. Especially petai and durian...

Back to the topic - the reason why I didn't eat fish head is because I think it's disgusting to eat the head part. I just didn't get the point why people want to eat the flesh from fish head. Further more I hate tedious job when it comes to eating.. but that perception changed soon after Jenn started to introduce me to new food, especially the fish head! Starting with just one bite, it gradually become more and more until a stage where Jenn actually complained that I ate more than she did :P

So one fine Saturday afternoon, we were in the vicinity as Jenn wanted to buy some furnitures for her legal firm in Segambut area. We didn't bring Sher Ryn along as we had a lot to do that day so Jenn's mom offered to take care of her for the weekend... YAY!!! Armed with Chui Ling's One Day Five Meals book, I put my Garmin into full use. Punching in the address, it led us all the way to Kepong area from Segambut :)

Parking was very difficult to find here... I circled the area a few times before finding one :( it was quite far from the restaurant too! What surprised me was the fact that I only saw one table being occupied. The whole place was almost empty which made me had second thought of going in. But then I look at my watch and it was after 2pm. "I don't come all the way here to go home empty-handed" I said to Jenn.

My main objective was to feast on their fish head... so I went for their signature style called "Guai Mei" which means weird taste in English! Rather peculiar choice of name for this dish I'd say. Anyway, like many other restaurants, "song" fish head was used to prepare this dish... it was fresh but the main highlight was definitely the sauce. It tasted spicy (might be very spicy to some people) and sour, surprisingly not over-powering the fish head and went very well with the rice. For RM20, we got a quite big fish head.

Deep fried pork belly with special sauce - the reddish colour of this dish piqued my curiousity. The meat was crispy and similar to those in Bukit Tinggi Pahang taste-wise but the only thing different was the colour. Delicious too!

The usual green :) felt less guilty with it!

All-you-can-eat-white rice

Leo's verdict - It turned out to be a wise decision for us to eat at this place even though the restaurant looked empty when we arrived. To those who are not familar with Kepong area, please do not attempt coming here unless you have friends who know the way, or you have GPS. This area is quite deep inside in between Kepong and Segambut area. The newspaper cutting on the wall stated that the cook is hearing impaired but it is a family business managed by the brothers. Parking can be a headache but the food was good enough to ignore this potential problem.

Ka Ka Ba Kut Teh @ Jalan Kepong, KL

My affair with this BKT place started almost concurrently with my affair with Jenn.. Whoopss!!! My relationship with Jenn :P Before going out with her, I didn't know what, when and where to eat... and even whom to eat with. Everyday just same ol stuff... mixed rice or also fondly known as economy rice. Don't get me wrong, I know how to appreciate good food. It's just I have no one to eat with. Truth to be told, I can go shopping alone, watching movie alone, on holiday alone... but I could never, never eat alone. The sight of those couples and families having meals together happily was sometimes too much to take. My family was in Pahang, my siblings were not those stay-at-home type. So I'd rather ta pao economy rice and eat back home.

Fast forward to March 2004... 19th March 2004 to be exact when Jenn was officially mine (ALL MINE!), she started to introduce me to a whole new world out there. I never realised that there were so many nice restaurants and eateries out there. Before that, my world was only confined to work, study and eat at nearby work/house area. Since she was staying with her aunt in Kepong Manjalara at that time, naturally she introduced me to good food around Kepong area... starting with this!

If you think mamak food is the only stuff that is available during wee hours in the morning, you are wrong! This BKT place opened until 2-3am!!! My sister who loved this place once told me that she went there at 3++am after clubbing just to eat their BKT. 5 years ago, the place was located just next to the main road of Jalan Kepong in wooden hut. But they were enjoying brisk business from dinner to supper time. One lane of Jalan Kepong was always parked with patrons who came to enjoy the dish. Then they moved into shoplot directly behind their original spot to make way for development. Still, cars were seen parking on the main road! The shop is just opposite Carrefour Kepong and the bright red sign is very hard to miss.

I haven't gone there for quite a long time. One night the opporutnity came when my youngest sister asked me out to dinner and I suggested this place. The first thing that you would probably notice is the huge crowd that never seem to cease (dinner time). The moment they cleared the table, another group of people would sit down immediately. On the outside, and inside! Words of reminder.. it can get pretty hot and stuffy inside so it is very hard to find empty table outside.

This is because part of the front entrance is used to prepare the bah kut teh... the presence of fans didn't help to cool down the interior.

Once taken your seat, you can proceed to the cook area... and be greeted with the sight of several pots of other dishes beside bah kut teh... braised chicken feet, braised pork, vinegar pork trotter, etc.

The sight the braised pork caught my attention this time.

Since I don't normally eat the pork's spare parts... I only asked for pork ribs and lean meat together with golden needle mushroom. FYI, they are very generous on the meat and mushroom... normally I share one portion with Jenn but that night, I asked for 2 portion as my cousin Gerald joined us. The broth was strong with herbal taste and flavourful and the meat was cooked until tender. Just the way I liked it :)

My sister asked for one portion of fu chuk and it tasted just as good with the silky smooth fu chuk.

Braised pork was another hit with us... cooked for a long time, the meat was very tender and quite spicy as they cooked it together with dried chilly.

A glass of chrysanthemum tea to cool down the heat!

Leo's verdict - those who follow my blog would have read that there are two places that I normally eat bah kut teh... one in Sri Setia and the other one is this place! While the former's BKT soup had less herbal taste, it made up with the sweetness from the pork bone. The latter's soup however, carries stronger herbal taste. If you ask my opinion, I like both... different way of preparation. I am still trying to locate one hidden BKT place in Klang that has the strongest herbal soup of all... the whole pot was literally full of herbal packets inside... gimme some time to locate it and I shall share with you all one day.

I notice that when it comes to bah kut teh, it's normally love-it-or-hate-it kind of experience. Some people like the strong taste of herbal, some don't... some like it peppery.. some like it light and easy. For me, this is the best BKT nearest to my house :) oh yes, I almost forget to mention that the fried fritters or yaw char koay is freshly made and chrunchy.

Restoran Wei Sun @ Jalan 9/62A, Bandar Manjalara Kepong

Jenn & I were out of idea on what to eat one Sunday evening, and so we switched on our TV, tuned in to 8TV for Ho Chak at 6.30pm for recommendations. So when they introduced Wei Sun which is located in MAnjalara, we found something to eat!! So we changed our clothes & I used my Garmin to point me the way to this place. 15 minutes later, we arrived at our intended destination.

I dropped Jenn in front of the shop to look for a table first, as parking was quite hard to find at that time. By the time I parked my car and walked in, the crowd has already filled the whole restaurant to the brim. According to the boss, most of them are regulars.

We were seated near the counter where they prepared drinks... and the boss wasted no time to take our order. From my table, I noticed that more people kept coming in but were made to wait for tables.

We ordered on what was introduced during the show, the signature seafood Lam Mee which was prepared using 3 types of chinese wine in order to give the dish some oommppphhhh!!!! Prawns, crab meats, and a few slices of abalone were thrown in... but don't expect generous portion of those seafoods ok? Both of us like the wine flavour that blended oh so perfectly into the broth. And the lam mee's texture was smooth and chewy! We finish the whole bowl of mee and its broth until the last drop...

As the boss said that the lam mee's portion was not enough for 2 pax, we asked for recommendation and she suggested fried lala mee hoon. Not too oily and full of wok hei... but the sizes of the lala were very, I mean... VERY... small (maybe puny is a better word of choice) that they looked like dace bean.

Stir fried veggie - no complains, as both of us prefer greens together with our dishes.

Leo's verdict - the restaurant can get quite cramped once it's packed, and it is recommended that you come here before 7-8pm if you don't like to wait for tables. They also offer dai chow dishes here... which I will come back one day to try.
